SURFnet is a state of the art internet network for university and research. SURFnet connects universities, colleges, research centres, university hospitals and scientific libraries with the World Wide Web.
 
The operational management of this high-tech network has been granted to the NOC-Alliance SARA - Telindus. They will provide SURFnet with a committed, flexible and innovative SURFnet6 NOC.
 
Responsible for the day-to-day network management of the SURnet6 network from a Central Operations Centre called the NOC-alliance, using a state of the art and unique management platform and adequate tools.
 
The NOC-alliance will assure a 24/7 service. The Support Engineer has to be prepared to work in a 2-fold extended business hours shift-system. Participation in an on call guard system is mandatory outside the extended business hours presence.
 
The Support Engineer will work in close contact with the experts of the NOC-alliance located in the Netherlands. Traveling to the Netherlands has to be considered. The Support Engineer will be detached to the Netherlands for a limited period for extensive training; he/she will be involved in the further roll-out and hand over of the infrastructure to SURFnet6
 
Job content
  • Maintaining customer's networking infrastructures. Reporting status and incidents, both internally and to customers.
  • Management of customer network infrastructures, follow-up and escalation.
  • Second line engineering support on network events and/or incidents.
  • Trace and resolve network problems with assistance of the experts of the NOC-alliance; co-ordinate complex incident resolution processes; write incident reports, documenting the root cause, impact, resolution steps, regression tests, lessons-learned.
  • Set-up, quality assurance and configuration of the SURFnet6 network infrastructure devices including configuration management; define and maintain device configurations, backup and restore policies in cooperation with the experts of the NOC-alliance.
  • Assess, document, perform and execute changes on customer infrastructures as an outcome of a managed incident or in accordance with change requests with respect to the change management process.
  • Producing and maintaining documentation and work instructions, according the procedures and operational processes on network infrastructures.
Profile
 
Education:
  • A1 / Industrial Engineer or equivalent by experience or university degree
Experience with one or more of the following technologies:
  • optical (?) switching and networking
  • CWDM and DWDM
  • Dynamic and static routing , BGP, OSPF
  • Good knowledge of networking: TCP/IP (IPv4 and IPv6) and Fast Ethernet switching
  • Physical Interfacing (10/100, 1Gb, 10Gb)
  • Management systems (Netcool, HPOV, SNMP and equivalent management tools .)
  • Experience with working in an ITIL based process environment.

  • Communicative skills, both orally and in writing

  • Able to work independently as well as in a team.
Language Skills:
  • Fluent English and Dutch speaking; written

Skills / Critical Competencies as a supplementary asset:
  • General telecommunication background. Knowledge of and experience with network - design, configuration, tuning and problem solving is a big asset
  • Knowledge of Nortel equipment (Common Photonic Layer (CPL) DWDM transport platform; Optical Metro OM5100/5200 multi service platform; MEMS switch; Optical cross connect HDXc Optical Muliserver Egde (OME) 6500; Optical cross connect HDXc Optical Muliserver Egde (OME) 1010 & 1060; Passport 8600 PR Ethernet routing switch) is a definite plus
    Knowledge of Avici systems equipment (Stackable Switch Router) is a definite plus
  • Knowledge of Cisco ONS15454 multiservice platform is a definite plus
  • Knowledge of and experience with network management tools
  • Writing technical documents (e.g., discussing technology issues; preparing and documenting installations and changes; reporting on incidents and root causes/solutions) is required as part of the job. Experience with PC office tools (MS/Office tools; technical drawing tools; reporting and group-communication tools) is required
